Malia and Sasha Obama will begin a new school on Monday as they start classes at the private Sidwell Friends in Washington D.C.

They follow in the footsteps of other former first children, including Chelsea Clinton and Richard Nixon’s daughters, as they attend the co-ed Quaker day school accompanied by Secret Service men.

The Obama girls will most likely attend classes on separate campuses as Malia, 10, a fifth-grader will go to the middle school campus in Northwest Washington and Sasha, 7, a second-grader will go to the lower school in Bethesda Md.

“We’re delighted to have them and welcome them into the community,” said Ellis Turner, associate head of school at Sidwell Friends where tuition tallies up to $28,442 at the lower school and $29,442 for middle and upper school.

Sidwell practices a Quaker philosophy that stresses community service and interconnectedness and boasts a diverse student body with nearly 40 percent non-white students and a at least 1 out of 5 students receiving financial aid.

Malia and Sasha previously attended the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where their mother Michelle is a board member.

Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha ended Hawaiian vacation on Thursday and flew back to their home state of Chicago.

After a 12-day vacation that included golfing, working out at the local Marine Corps Base, paying respects to his late grandmother, visiting the zoo with Malia and Sasha, and strolling shirtless on the beach, Obama and his future first family are heading to Washington D.C. after making a pit stop in Chicago.

This weekend the Obamas will take up temporary residence at the historic Hay-Adams hotel in D.C. for two weeks before moving into the Blair House, the official government guest residence, on January 15 and finally settling into the White House after the inauguration on January 20.

The family’s stay at the swank Hay-Adams hotel which runs upwards of $700 for a regular room to $6,000 for a Presidential Suite is being funded by private transition funds.
