The July issue of Spin magazine pays tribute to Prince‘s “Purple Rain” album and film which was released 25 years ago with a free downloadable cover album.
The music magazine features a 10-page oral history compiled and written by Brian Raftery and a tribute album of nine bands performing covers of the classic tracks.
While Prince and the Time’s Morris Day were not on-hand for interviews, Wendy and Lisa, members of the Revolution, Bob Cavallo, the film’s producer and Prine’s manager at the time, director Albert Magnoli and the original screenplay writer William Blinn were among the many who participated.
“We did a full court press to get Prince himself involved,” said Spin editor Doug Brod. “He’s a pretty tough guy to get a hold of, and he doesn’t dwell much on nostalgia.”
The free downloadable album, accessible on spin.com on June 23, features former Prince protegee Apollonia on the track “When Doves Cry” with Greg Dulli and his band, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings singing “Take Me With U,” and Of Montreal covering “Computer Blue.”
“We approached a bunch of bands, and we got nine who were really into it,” Spin editor Doug Brod told Billboard.com. “All these bands did it for free — they paid for all of their recording time and they mastered all the tracks themselves.”
