Oprah Donates $365k To ‘Vote However You Like’ Students Of Atlanta’s Ron Clark School

The Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta was gifted with $365,000 from media mogul Oprah Winfrey last week.

When asked by Clark how she arrived at the denomination of the donation Oprah reportedly told him, “I’m sending $1,000 for every day of the year.”

The Academy made headlines last year when it’s middle schoolers sang their political song “You Can Vote However You Like” at the Coca-Cola Leadership Summit in Atlanta and subsequently performed on various news shows. The song, a remake of rapper T.I.’s hit song “Whatever You Like,” encouraged voter participation in the 2008 presidential election by offering both Democratic and Republican viewpoints

Clark, who has taught schools in rural North Carolina as well as a New York’s inner-city, opened the Academy in mid 2007 in Atlanta using funds from the sales of his two books The Essential 55 and The Excellent 11 and donations. He received the 2001 Disney Teacher of the Year award, appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show twice and has been recognized for his use of music and dance in his teaching methodology. His story was made into a television movie in 2006 with Matthew Perry in the starring role.

Oprah Winfrey Signs Exclusive Movie Deal With HBO

Oprah Winfrey’s production company Harpo Films has signed an exclusive deal to develop and produce movies and miniseries for premium cable channel HBO.

The new three-year deal which begins in 2009 ends the long standing relationship Harpo Films has had with ABC that produced the Emmy-award winning films Tuesdays with Morrie and Their Eyes Were Watching God.

Kate Forte, president of Harpo Films said, “it just seemed like a natural progression to move to HBO.”

“Over the last year, every time that I was bringing up projects to Oprah, every time she’d say ‘this is perfect for HBO,” Forte added.

Winfrey’s own channel, aptly named OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, is debuting next year but is expected to focus on non-scripted programming.

ObamaNation: Oprah Winfrey Too Busy to Work in Barack’s Administration

She may have campaigned for Barack Obama during the election season, but Queen of Talk Oprah Winfrey’s never considered working for the president-elect, according to the Associated Press.

“I have a few full-time jobs already and a few full-time commitments, you know — contractual commitments that say I have to be where I am,” she said. “So, it never ever occurred to me, not even occurred to me.”

“Even if I was offered, I still have contractual commitments and what could I do?” she added. “I do what I do best on TV every day.”

But she’s still a fan of Obama, going as far as relocating her show to Washington D.C. to witness history during inauguration week–and she’s still in need of a dress for the ball.

“I had a dress on the vision board, but I’m not sure that’s gonna fit,” she said, “so I have to work on something else.”
