Jo-Wilfried Tsonga tops our list of one-to-watch athletes for 2009.
The 23 year-old French tennis player ranked number six in the world after competing in the season-ending tournament this past Sunday in Shanghai.
Dubbed the “Muhammad Ali of Tennis” because of his likeness to the boxer, Tsonga burst onto the world scene when he won his first Masters Series title by defeating Argentinean player David Nalbandian at the BNP Paribas Masters tournament on November 2.
He also became the first player from his country to win a Masters tournament since Sébastien Grosjean won the trophy in 2001.
Tsonga was born in Le Mans, France to a French mother and a Congolese father and also boasts Newcastle United’s midfielder Charles N’Zogbia as a cousin.
Blindie is ga ga for “Jo-Wil” and will be following him closely when he plays South African Tennis Open in February.Read More
