The December issue of Playboy‘s Mexican edition is causing quite a stir with a semi-nude model posing as the Virgin Mary on its cover.
Draped in a simple white cloth, model Maria Florencia Onori strikes a religious pose in front of a stained glass window alongside the headline, “We adore you, Mary.”
The magazine was released just days before a Mexican festival dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe and not to mention during the month of one of the most important Christian holidays in which the birth of the Virgin Mary’s son is celebrated.
The Chicago-based Playboy Enterprises Inc. released this apology. “While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognize that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies.”
Raul Sayrols, publisher of Playboy Mexico, had this to say in another statement, “The image is not and never was intended to portray the Virgin of Guadalupe or any other religious figure. The intent was to reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover.”
