Arkansas City Mayor Dons Blackface Drag For Fundraising Pageant -And Wins!

Arkansas City Mayor Mel Kuhn dressed in drag and donned blackface on Sunday for “Men In Tights”, the annual fund raiser sponsored by Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), an agency that supports foster children in the court system.

Kuhn named his character “Smellishis Poon” and even had back-up dancers for the talent show portion of the pageant called the “Red Hot Puntangs.” His performance won top prize as he was crowned Miss CASA 2008.

The Mayor insisted that he was not in blackface but in “tanface” and that the spectacle was “the best way [he] could think of to make as many people laugh as possible and raise money for this charity.”

After a meeting with the NAACP, Kuhn finally realized the error of his ways and issued an apology in a written statement.

“It has been brought to my attention how offensive this was, and I absolutely agree that it was shortsighted of me not to see that in the first place. I am sincerely sorry, and I sincerely apologize for the offensive nature of my actions. This was not CASA, this was of my own volition, and I take full responsibility for my actions. The buck absolutely stops here.” Kuhn said in his statement.

However, the Kansas town Mayor warned that he would rescind the apology if “people wouldn’t accept it.”
