The Seven Pounds star beat out last year’s top Money Maker Johnny Depp and seven-time winner Tom Cruise, who both did not make the list this year. Smith is only the second African American to hold the title after Sidney Poitier nabbed the spot in 1968 following the success of the films Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner and In the Heat of the Night.
Robert Downey Jr., Christian Bale and Shia LaBeouf all made debut appearances on the list in second, third, and fourth places respectively.
The Quigley poll is conducted by the publishers of the International Motion Picture Almanac and surveys movie theater owners and film buyers to vote for the 10 stars they believe generated the most box office revenue for their theaters during the year.
