Slumdog Millionaire Wins Rave Reviews At British Film Awards And Generates Oscar Buzz

The latest film from 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle won three prizes at the British Independent Film Awards on Sunday and has already been gaining box office prestige in the United States.

Slumdog Millionaire is the exhilarating story of a poor 18 year-old Indian boy, played by Dev Patel, who has a chance of winning on the gameshow Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? and reuniting with his true love.

Slumdog won in the Best British independent film, Best Director and Most Promising Newcomer categories at the festival.

Stateside, the film raked in an impressive $350,434 million during its opening weekend in just 10 theaters, making it the year’s top earner per theater, and continues to perform well as it expands to 75 theaters on Friday and 600 by Dec. 19.

Another added attraction to the film is the soundtrack which features music by A.R. Rahman, who was dubbed the “Mozart of Madras” by Time magazine, and M.I.A.’s hit single Paper Planes.

Ga Ga: Comic Book-Turned-Film The Spirit Trailer With Eva Mendes And Samuel Jackson

The 1940 comic book The Spirit has been made into a film that promises to give Iron Man a run for its superhero money.

Directed by Frank Miller and featuring the stunning visual technology utilized in his previous films 300 and Sin City, Spirit stars Samuel Jackson as villain The Octopus and Eva Mendes, Paz Vega and Scarlett Johansson among the many femme fatales.

Conspicuosly missing, and thankfully so, is the Spirit’s sidekick Ebony White, a racist African American stereotype.

The Spirit opens in theatres on Christmas day.
