African Swimmer Oussama Mellouli Wins Gold At Olympics

Tunisian swimmer Oussama Mellouli beat out Australian Grant Hackett this morning in the men’s 1,500-meter freestyle race. Mellouli clocked in at 14:40.84, thwarting Hackett’s goal of earning a record third Olympic gold and earning Tunisia its first Olympic swimming gold medal.

“It was all calculated. I slowed down in the penultimate 100m to save energy and attack in the final 50m,” said the 24-year-old swimmer. “It’s the redemption I wanted, and I got it,” Mellouli declared, referring to testing positive for amphetamines at a meet in Indiana in 2006. He admitted to taking an Adderall pill to avoid falling asleep while studying at the University of Southern California.
