Star Trek‘s Zoe Saldana Never Watched the Original Series But Says She’s a Trekkie Now

Star Trek beauty Zoe Saldana may be the lone female on J.J. Abram's Enterprise, but she admits to not having watched the original series. Sorry Trekkies! "I never saw that," Saldana, who plays Uhura, said in a recent interview with BlackFilm.com. "I was not a fan until now and I have so much admiration for what they did, and how much the series continues to grow after 45 years and I had the honor of meeting Nichelle Nichols." Of her meeting with Nichols, Saldana reveals that Nichols told her she named Uhura herself. "I was able to sit down with her and she told me the whole story of how Uhura came to be and where they were going with her character," Saldana said. "But it all fell into place the moment she walked into the door and auditioned for the part." As for the Uhura's famous costume, Saldana said, "The moment everything came together from the hair, the costume, being on the set, and then you start to feel, 'Okay, this is real. This is amazing and fun'."

Mattel, makers of the Barbie doll, is producing a set of Barbies featuring Zoe Saldana as Uhura in Star Trek! The action figures, which also include Ken replicas of Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, will be sure-fire collect collectors items! Of Saldana's performance, which includes a highly-anticipated topless scene, director J.J Abrams recently said, "She's awesome in the movie. She's fantastic. She's always a genius." The Star Trek dolls will be available in April and will retail for $45. The upcoming blockbuster hits theaters in May.

The Dominican beauty from Queens, who made her big-screen debut in 2000's Center Stage, said of meeting Nichelle Nichols (who originated the sex symbol Trekkie role), "We held hands as we talked and Nichelle explained just what, as a black woman, her on-screen kiss with Shatner in a 1968 episode meant at the time." Saldana, who shared similar history in a different era when she starred opposite hunks Orlando Bloom in 2004's Haven and Ashton Kutcher in 2005's Guess Who, added, "I have nothing but respect for what they were fighting for. She is an icon."

Kirk, Heroes star Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Harold & Kumar's John Cho as Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, Karl Urban as McCoy, and one of Blindie's favorite actresses Zoe Saldana as Uhura. Of her role, Saldana said, "It’s great to see an exotic face in sci-fi. Little girls who look like me, or who are Arab, Filipina, whatever, are going to go, ‘Oh, my God, we can be in space, too!’"
