New Moon News: Taylor Lautner Still Not Cast, Native American Actors Hard to Find & Chris Weitz May Direct

Posted on December 11, 2008 with 185 Comments

The Twilight sequel, New Moon, is tentatively slated for Nov. 20, 2009 meaning the cast will be back on the Vancouver set in March, according to Entertainment Weekly.

But, as we’ve previously reported, up-and-coming hunk Taylor Lautner may NOT be among the New Moon cast to play rapidly-maturing werewolf Jacob Black.

Sources tell EW that Lautner’s agent has been reaching out to the imaging company behind The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (where Brad Pitt plays a man who ages backward) in an attempt to demonstrate to Summit Entertainment how Lautner could be digitally bulked-up.

Even though Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke said it was difficult casting Native American actors for the hit vamp flick, Summit says it won’t make a decision on Lautner’s casting until a new director is on board.

As for the director who will have a $50 million budget to pump out this sequel in less than a year? An offer was out to Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass, American Pie, About a Boy) to make the guaranteed hit sequel.

GIMME FIVE: Blindie’s Shortlist of the Directors We’d Trust to Make New Moon

Posted on December 8, 2008 with No Comments

With Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke leaving the franchise, Blindie’s made a shortlist of directors we’d trust with the next installment of the vampire franchise, New Moon:

1. Sofia Coppola: From adapting books (The Virgin Suicides) to creating her own world (Lost in Translation), we’d love to see how she’d bring her love of pop culture (Marie Antoinette was pure eye candy!) to the story.

2. Sanaa Hamri: She has experience with sequels, having directed Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. But she also knows how to tell a story. Case in point, Something New, which made the idea of an interracial relationship less foreign and more realistic.

3. Joe Wright: His superb job of adapting Pride & Prejudice was amazing…and if he could handle such a classic with such care, we’d trust him with New Moon!

4. Amy Heckerling: We should bring her back to her Clueless acclaim with New Moon! This writer-director could really bring her visionary touch to the sequel.

5. Christopher Nolan: The Dark Knight and Batman Begins writer-director could up the ante in the special effects department and knows how to balance action and love.

Catherine Hadwicke Says Goodbye: Twilight Sequel New Moon Getting New Director

Posted on December 8, 2008 with No Comments

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke won’t be returning to helm the franchise’s sequel, New Moon.

While we’re sad that Hardwicke won’t be returning, as Twilighters, we want to see the movie next year, not in mid-2010, and her departure will give us an earlier release for the sequel.

In a statement, Hardwicke said, “Directing Twilight has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film.”

While the studio issued this statement, “Catherine did an incredible job in helping us to launch the Twilight franchise…We as a studio have a mandate to bring the next installment in the franchise to the big screen in a timely fashion so that fans can get more of Edward, Bella and all of the characters that Stephenie Meyer has created.”
