Tyra Banks, Designer Patrick Robinson And Stylist June Ambrose, Top US Weekly‘s Most Stylish List

While Blindie loves to report on Tyra Banks, goes ga ga over Gap's head designer Patrick Robinson, and thinks June Ambrose was shutting it down with innovative, futuristic styling on music videos way before Rachel Zoe was a household name, we're still not sure what to make of some of the other celebs on Us Weekly's 25 Most Stylish New Yorkers of '08. The list is a hodge-podge of actresses, designers and TV correspondents (Gayle King even made the list! We didn't even know she was a New Yorker. We thought she lived in Chicago--next door to Oprah). Even a few random folks who we're quite sure are unknown to the average US audience made the list! Hello? Deborah Marquardt and chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten? Jean George Vongerichten But the absolute head-scratcher has to be Aubrey O'Day of the Diddy girl group Danity Kane...that girl used to be the fresh-faced hot girl next door and has gone on to become the tranniest, most weaveable white girl on MTV!

Janelle Monae Dubbed ‘Girlie Grace Jones’ in GQ Newcomer Spread

Featured in the latest issue of GQ, quirky singer Janelle Monae says of signing with Diddy, "I wanted to work with someone who'd get excited then leave me alone creatively." The Atlanta native's debut EP, Metropolis: The Chase, is also called an "explosion of retrofuturistic funk, a bombastic one-woman sci-fi rock opera," by the magazine, which also compliments her on having "the looks of a girlie Grace Jones." Of her style, which she has picked up from studying footage of James Brown, Buddy Holly, Mick Jagger and Judy Garland, the 23-year-old says, "I just learned how to let my own inner whatever-it-is come out."

Carlos Campos Announces All-Black Lineup For Runway Show

Even though Diddy did it for his fall 2008 Sean John collection and Dsquared2 followed suit with a mostly non-white runway show, it still makes headlines when a designer chooses to go exclusively black. Menswear designer Carlos Campos sent out a press release announcing he will be using an all-black cast of models for his first womenswear runway show at the Altman building on Monday during Fashion Week. The release describes Campos's collection as "jet set rockstar — think David Bowie and Iman on holiday in the South of France." Iman is also credited as inspiring the all-black casting. The New York Observer poses the obvious question "...should we interpret Mr. Campos's show as having diversity for the sake of diversity, or just a publicity stunt?" And considering the recent succes of Italian Vogue's black issue, Blindie is wondering the same thing.

Ga Ga: Janelle Monae’s Bad Boy Introduction

Having recently performed at the fourth annual Afro-Punk Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Janelle Monae is heading to the masses with Bad Boy at her side. The latest addition to the house of Sean "Diddy" Combs' Bad Boy Entertainment, Monae is a cross between David Bowie, Andy Warhol, Grace Jones and James Brown...we have to give kudos where kudos is due because we loves us some quirk! Diddy recently said that Monae is "one of the most important signings of my career." Pre-Bad Boy, Kansas-native Monae hit the Big Apple to study at the prestigious music and theatre conservatory, The American Musical and Dramatic Academy. She later relocated to Atlanta, got a cult following, started her own indie label with producers Nate “Rocket” Wonder and Chuck Lightning (Wondaland Arts Society), and released her groundbreaking album, METROPOLIS. Bad Boy is re-releasing Monae's sci-fi-themed METROPOLIS project--complete with an alter ego, Cindi Mayweather, and a comic book. Titled Metropolis:The Chase Suite, the re-release is coming out in August, while on the third of that same month, Monae will be performing at Central Park SummerStage in NYC.
