New Moon News: Taylor Lautner Still Not Cast, Native American Actors Hard to Find & Chris Weitz May Direct

The Twilight sequel, New Moon, is tentatively slated for Nov. 20, 2009 meaning the cast will be back on the Vancouver set in March, according to Entertainment Weekly.

But, as we’ve previously reported, up-and-coming hunk Taylor Lautner may NOT be among the New Moon cast to play rapidly-maturing werewolf Jacob Black.

Sources tell EW that Lautner’s agent has been reaching out to the imaging company behind The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (where Brad Pitt plays a man who ages backward) in an attempt to demonstrate to Summit Entertainment how Lautner could be digitally bulked-up.

Even though Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke said it was difficult casting Native American actors for the hit vamp flick, Summit says it won’t make a decision on Lautner’s casting until a new director is on board.

As for the director who will have a $50 million budget to pump out this sequel in less than a year? An offer was out to Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass, American Pie, About a Boy) to make the guaranteed hit sequel.

It seems movie execs are still debating whether teen cutie Taylor Lautner will be returning for the Twilight sequel New Moon as Jacob Black, according to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, which features newly minted heartthrob Robert Pattinson on its cover.

While director Catherine Hardwicke initially alluded that Lautner will be joining stars Pattinson (who plays Edward Cullen) and Kristen Stewart (who plays Bella Swan) in the sequel, the studio hasn’t officially signed the teen star.

”We are definitely talking and thinking about it right now,” Summit’s president of production told EW. ”Taylor’s fantastic as Jacob in Twilight. I think when we get closer to shooting, the director is going to look at everyone as if they are brand-new to the role.”

Lauren Graham (aka Lorelai Gilmore of the Gilmore Girls) will appear as the long-suffering Miss Adelaide to Oliver Platt’s Nathan Detroit in the upcoming revival of Guys and Dolls, opening March 1 at the Nederlander Theatre in New York.

Blindie’s been missing Graham’s wit and talent since the cancellation of her long-running WB/The CW series. Since her exodus from Stars Hollow, Graham has starred on the big screen with Steve Carell in Evan Almighty and Greg Kinnear in Flash of Genius.
