Star Trek beauty Zoe Saldana posed for a high-flying circus spread in the April issue of In Style (coincidentally their “color issue” ha!), where she discussed how growing up in New York and the Dominican Republic influenced her style.

“I learned to embrace color, drama and flair,” the actress, who plays Lieutenant Uhura in J. J. Abrams’s much-anticipated prequel, said. “It’s my nostalgia for a very important time in my life.”

Saldana also revealed her dancing roots (she got her start as a broke Off-Broadway dancer; and remember Center Stage?): “I got so much out of being a dancer. The stillness of it. The discipline. The dedication.”

“Clothes can send a powerful message,” Saldana added. “You don’t have to be on a movie set to tell a story. You can play a part on the red carpet or at a photo shoot.”
