Annette Gordon-Reed’s New Book on Thomas Jefferson’s Concubine Sally Hemings

In 1997 Annette Gordon-Reed created waves with her book Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy which questioned previous accounts of Jefferson's affair with his slave Hemings. It wasn't that Gordon-Reed went about scandalizing the former President by ousting the fact that he had children with the woman he owned--but by presenting a portrait of his concubine. In her latest effort, The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family, the author further explores Sally Hemings, the person. Gordon-Reed follows four generations of Hemingses from their roots in Virginia in the 1700s to Jefferson's death in 1826. “I wanted to tell the story of this family in a way not done before” so that readers can “see slave people as individuals,” Gordon-Reed told the New York Times. What Blindie loves about Gordon-Reed is the fact that she paints a portrait of Sally Hemings that is not exploitive or tabloid-worthy, but an intimate look at her as a person--not a slave or a concubine that had a former president's illegitimate children. The New York Review of Books calls The Hemingses of Monticello (on sale Monday) "a brilliant book. It marks the author as one of the most astute, insightful, and forthright historians of this generation."

In the new series--which premieres on October 3--Reaser plays Bella Bloom, a singleton who happens to visit a psychic who tells her she will marry a man she's already met--but she has to do it within a year. The premise is adorable and will be a sure-fire chick hit. It's tag line says, "She's making a list and kissing them twice." A Michigan native, Reaser attended New York's acclaimed The Julliard School. Her film credits include The Family Stone, with Claire Danes and SJP, and The Believer, with Ryan Gosling. Ga Ga: K’Naan Kicks Off US Tour with Surprise Performance by Mos Def in New York

Canadian poet and hip hop artist from Somalia K'Naan kicked off his US tour at Le Poisson Rouge in New York's Greenwich Village Thursday night. During his performance, the thought-provoking lyricist surprised an eclectic crowd of fans when rapper-actor Mos Def joined him during his set. Mos Def has said K'Naan can "make a song anywhere...out of anything!" During his show, K'Naan also previewed music from his upcoming LP Troubadour, which like his debut album The Dusty Foot Philosopher, chronicles his rise from the rough war-torn streets of Somalia. Like most hip-hop artists, K'Naan explores themes of gun and street violence, but chooses to yield his troubled years as a youth in a more eloquent and thoughtful manner. Blindie's just ga ga over this award-winning folk-rap artist and looks forward to hearing more from him in the future!

Project Runway Watch: Jerell Scott Wins ‘Working Girl’ Challenge

The Project Runway designers were given the task of making over recent college grads and giving them a work-appropriate look for their entry into the working force. A few of the designers completely missed the mark and wound up channeling the costumes on Working Girl. Jerell Scott, however, came out on top, winning rave reviews from the judges for completely transforming a lanky, quirky girl into a chic and hip woman. Blindie is ga ga over Jerell and his upbeat personality served with a side of sass! Here are Blindie's Top Ten moments:

  1. Jerell reveals his first job was at McDonalds! We're lovin' it!
  2. Korto sets out to design a piece with leather and declares, "Since Stella is gone, I'm the queen of lea-thah!"
  3. Jerell references drag queen Hedda Lettuce as he describes Leanne's difficult client: "We were all kind of waiting to see who was gonna get the Hedda Lettuce in this challenge and it seems like it might be Leanne."
  4. Jerell pokes fun at Joe's outdated skirt suit and his use of pocket squares for a young woman: "Come on Joe, you're gonna work on Nancy Reagan tomorrow."
  5. After chuckling with Kenley about Joe's 1980s design, Jerell then turns the sass on Kenley: "She can make one hell of a fifties, sixties dress, that's all, and that's all she serves up!"
  6. Kenley's cockiness is out of control as she dismisses Tim's critiques: "Tim doesn't really understand me as a designer. I never really change anything for Tim." She then rips apart Suede: "That's why he's not a good designer, he can't incorporate his style into different looks...it's horrible, horrible."
  7. Michael Kors says of Joe's design disaster, "Talk about a time capsule! You could almost seriously wear that and go to a "Working Girl party!"
  8. Korto may mumble a lot and seem sort of cranky but she can make a mean jacket! Her impeccable tailoring wins Blindie's vote!
  9. Heidi says Suede's design "was dated, overworked and completely impractical," while guest judge Cynthia Rowley calls it "just a disaster." So why is Joe out and Suede in? Please bring back the double elimination.
  10. Jerell wins another challenge! Hell yeah!

The Real Housewives Of Atlanta: Sneak A Peek Of The Oct. 7th Premiere

After watching the preview episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Blindie just couldn't wait for the October 7th premiere! So we snagged a screener, put some shades on to protect us from all the high wattage jewelry and attitude, and took notes on all the obnoxious and outrageous moments. Here are the top ten moments that make this season's Housewives better than Gossip Girl, Project Runway and 90210 all rolled up into one overpriced package:

  1. DeShawn Snow says "I always knew I was destined for greatness" and "ever since I was little I knew I was destined to be somebody." Did we miss something here? What did she do besides marry a basketball player? She didn't even decorate the house!
  2. Kim Zolciak, who we enjoy simply calling "the white girl", says "I'm a black woman trapped in a white woman's body."
  3. And Kim is being kept by, err dating a celebrity who "prefers to remain anonymous" and whom she refers to as "Big Poppa". Blindie is guessing Poppa is a black celebrity who is either married or doesn't want anyone to know he likes the taste of vanilla.
  4. Sheree Whitfield who is waiting for her "lump sum" divorce settlement in order to "maintain her lifestyle -if not better" scoffs "budget, what's that?" with a wave of her hand.
  5. And she plans her birthday party with a staff of people and requests a cake in the shape of her Louis Vuitton handbag! Wait, didn't we see this on MTV's My Super Sweet 16?
  6. Alll of the ladies are scrambling to out-glam each other for Sheree's birthday party except Lisa Wu Hartwell, who throws on a pair of jeans, a satin top and a fur jacket!
  7. White girl Kim meets her fashion designer, Dean Perdue, at a Shell gas station! Off the highway! And changes into her custom tailored outfit at the side of her car! While her girlfriend Nene holds up a coat to shield her! We loved every tacky minute of it!
  8. Dean Perdue's Catholic-school-stripper dress he designed for white girl Kim and his lazy southern drawl, with the slight hint of a California valley girl, makes us want to see him on Project Runway or his own reality show.
  9. Tell-it-like-it-is NeNe Leakes is denied entrance to Sheree's party and gets bounced by security! And boy does she tell it like it is in the driveway as she curses up a storm! We were just as mortified as NeNe was and we're ordering our "Team NeNe" shirts right now!
  10. Sheree actually tears up when she is serenaded by a low-rent R&B crooner at her party! Seriously, is this MTV's My Super Sweet 16?

Naomi confronts her daddy's mistress only to find out she's moving into the family's Malibu beach house, rather than living in Denver. 9. "I'm a black kid living with a white family. It doesn't get any more weird than that," Dixon confides in Silver about his family. 10. Silver finally gets flirty with Dixon: "So when are you going to ask me out?" she says before asking Dixon the next morning, "Up all night thinking about me?" BONUS: When Kelly confronts Brenda about talking about her baby daddy with the hot lit teacher, Brenda says: "I'm saying you still have feelings for him...You are never going to be happy with anyone because you're still in love with DYLAN!"
